Photo ID Requirements

Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013

New photo ID requirements:
The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 became law on the 1st October 2013. Photo identification with proof of address is now a legal requirement from all persons disposing of scrap metal. The following forms of photo ID are acceptable:

Valid UK photo-card driving licence (includes address)
or
Valid UK passport with valid UK paper driving licence
or
Valid UK passport, valid EEA passport, valid UK biometric immigration document or valid EU National ID card, and in each case supported with proof of address (and not more than 3 months old to the current date) in the form of either:
  • Utility bill, but not a mobile phone bill
  • Bank, building society or mortgage statement
  • Credit or debit card statement
  • Council tax demand or statement
  • HMRC correspondence
  • TV licence

The yard will record each document presented by obtaining a copy which will be retained for inspection by the police and other agencies. The ID will be copied and electronically stored for a minimum period of 36 months. Any identification taken as part of your transaction will be securely treated in line with the new General Data Protection Regulations that came in to force on the 25 May 2018.
